Success Stories – Seven Years of seif Awards

SEVEN YEARS OF SEIF AWARDS

A Successful History of Social Entrepreneurship Advocacy

The seif Awards for Social Entrepreneurship, being the first and one of the biggest business plan competitions in German-speaking Europe, has rewarded ventures, applying innovative business ideas to social and/or environmental problems for seven consecutive years now. Looking back, we are glad to see the impact the seif Awards had on the winners: Social Entrepreneurs have become a recognizable feature in our ecosystem and each year we could identify a huge development in terms of professionalism and measuring as well as presenting the social impact.

We would like to whole-heartedly thank all of those who have been part of this journey so far!

What has been your biggest achievement so far?

“Through the seif Award we got in touch with UBS, one of the presenting partners of the award. Since 2017 they support us financially and enable us to finalize and promote our school lessons according to Education Plan 21. This is a big achievement that enables us to scale up more quickly since the teachers can now act as multipliers. With the increasing need for professionalization in the social sector, we put some emphasis on business processes and impact measurement. Moreover, to maximize our impact and reach, we expanded to Germany and Austria and are now running our trainings all over the DACH region. We are currently searching for ways to make even more use of our experience accompanying teenagers for many years.

What advise would you give other social entrepreneurs that are just starting out?

We aim to be an innovative, mission-driven and professional organization, therefore, self-responsibility of each employee and trainer is crucial. If you want your employees to enlarge your capacity and be a support you have to allocate enough time in the recruiting process. We, for example, offer trial days and make sure to align the expectations on a regular basis.

What has been your biggest achievement so far?

“Looking at survival rates of startups, the biggest achievement is that we are still standing on our feet, motivated more than ever to make a change. In the course of the years after winning the award, we got a lot of confirmation for the need of our services. Of course, during the last years, we’ve been able to further professionalize our business. WeAct is a well-established brand in the Market for Sustainability in Business.  It is a pleasure to work with such a diverse pool of customers, ranging from the finance to the industrial sector. We are proud to see our contribution to the development towards a more sustainable society.”

What advise would you give other social entrepreneurs that are just starting out?

“As important as it might be to dream big and have a clear vision, when it comes to breaking it down into a business plan and yearly goals, you need to stay realistic. It’s the continuous juggling between resiliently holding on to your ideas and being open towards pivots that has been crucial to our success. Furthermore, it makes sense to put a lot of effort in creating a compelling story around your mission – it also helps to realign within the team.”

Bertrand KlaiberWhat has been your biggest achievement so far?

Industrialization and deployment of complex medical technologies in developing and emerging economies require important funds. The challenge for Pristem was to attract the right investors who were ready to invest large amounts of money in an ambitious, risky and long project. This was possible by showing them that very large social impact and important returns on investment were jointly expected in the future.

What advise would you give other social entrepreneurs that are just starting out?

“Communicate your vision to convince people to join and support your project, and prove that you can build the technical, financial and human organization required to serve your social mission in a sustainable and scalable way.”
